A toxic alga spreads around west coast
The Pacific Ocean is becoming the center of all environmental disaster. In the north there are unregulated drilling of Arctic. The industries in California are dumping toxic waste in Ocean, where as Japan is killing species such as whales and dolphin on the other side. Now on the top of all that scientists have observed that a poisonous type of algae is taking over the pacific sea shores.
Professor Raphael Kudella from the University of California, Santa Cruz said that for the first time the west coast is experiencing such large scale algae bloom. He teaches ocean sciences at the University. The China is also experiencing similar kind of algal growth in coastal areas. The experts said that the bloom occupied larger area in Qingdao but wasn’t poisonous in nature.
Microscopic algae are the part of the bloom that makes water brown-green color but that is not the most dangerous thing. Pseudo-nitzschia, a single celled type of algae is releasing domoic acid in the water. The satellite images and chemical composition of the water proves that there are higher quantities of this neurotoxins present in the water along the coast.
The algae will growth up to the coast of Alaska from Santa Barbara, the location where it started. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association are tracking the growth since May and institute is also studying the effects of Algae. The scale of bloom is dangerous. Small level blooming of toxic algae is very much common during spring at Pacific Ocean.
