If you are one of those who are trying to save energy and to save the environment, but your energy bill is higher every month, there are some ways you can use to control your energy use. The first and the most important thing you will have to do is to perform a home energy checkup. Many companies that provide your home with energy, will do a free checkup. Professionals will come and try to help you reduce your energy bill. They will check your windows, doors, lightening, insulation, heating and cooling devices. After the check, they will give you advices on how to use less energy.
You can perform an energy checkup by yourself. In fact, you should do it once a year or even better two times per year. The most affordable and one of the most useful advices is to replace your bulbs with CFLs (fluorescent bulbs). They use 1/3-1/5 less energy, but they last 8-15 times longer. Yes, they are more expensive than conventional bulbs, but you don’t have to replace them often.
The next step is to check your water heater. Hot and cold pipes on it should be covered with pipe insulation. An electric water heater should have a tank wrap. If you don’t have a pipe insulation nor the tank wrap, you can install them yourself.
Other things you must check are: outlets (use a smart strip), doors and windows (make sure there are no air leaks or you will have problems with heating/cooling your home), vents (check them for holes and close them when you don’t use them) and heating/cooling systems.
