Europe’s marine animals under danger

The global biodiversity is degrading as world enters in to the next level of industrial revolution. The developing countries such as China, India are industrializing on a massive scale and acquiring forest land for the same. The Europe, trying to claim glory post world war II is also following the same path where around 40 percent shark and sting rays are vulnerable to extinction. The marine creatures have been listed under the study by reliable IUCN’s red list.

The list contains 1,220 marine species from Europe. International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN), the publisher found out that the number of fish population has been declining.  Along with near threatened species in the list, the number points out that 10 percent marine species are on the verge of extinction in the Europe.  The latest study of the World Bank also showed the economic impact of overfishing. The United Nations general assembly also supported this report and highlighted the lack of treaty to protect marine life in the deep seas.

The chairman Simon Stuart from the IUCN’s species survival commission informed the press that the European seas posses risks to many commercially and ecologically important species. This is very shocking for the ecology of continent. The chairman told that urgent action is necessary to reduce over fishing and hunting of the vulnerable species.  The fishing quotas should be enforced as per the number of concerned species population. Accidental fish deaths due to coastal development, pollution and overfishing are reasons behind the sudden drop in the fish population.
