Waste Management in Communities
Communities suffering a shortage of good solid waste services from their local government due to government negligence and also due to the fact that the local government appears to be incompetent. Many such communities partner up with each other through a collective that effort that ensures proper waste management till any such government steps in. There are many examples of communities where the citizens have set up their own collective- woman’s initiative, A group of waste-pickers for the very same community and joint youth association programs which help to manage the waste. Some groups also volunteer for door to door collection using small carts or baskets to ensure proper waste management.
Many communities have also managed to set up various centers for the formation of vermin-compost and also other trash related products. They have been highly useful in setting up trees and shrubs throughout the community to make it more aesthetically pleasing. Another thing to note is that each house a usual part of this collective initiative of the community in which everyone assigned a role to ensure that proper waste management is achieved. Communities that reside and work as waste pickers at open dumps typically involve the poorest and most long-suffering residents of a city. Thousands, and sometimes tens of thousands, of waste pickers and their families may live on and around an open dump, breathing the fumes of toxic gaseous emissions and smoke from open burning, as they sort through wastes for subsistence existence. Efforts to organize, legitimize, upgrade, and support these people are part of many projects to improve solid waste disposal conditions.
