Extreme Hoarders Can Teach Us about Being Green

Climate change and global warming have an enormous negative impact on the environment and the economy. It is important for us to come up with ways of reversing and combatting these two challenges to safeguard the wellbeing of the current and future generations.

Extreme hoarders are not only troubled people, but people whom we should notice and learn a few tips and tricks about green living. One of the news related to the hoarders that has attracted attention from all across the globe is that of a Sydney family who sleeps in a van that is parked in their yard. Over the years, this family has accumulated an unimaginable amount of stuff.

Another story that literally went viral on the internet is that of a man who lived in Dallas, Texas. When he died, the authorities and health services personnel had to open up a section of the roof to access his body. It took the team two days to find his body due to the huge volume of stuff inside the house. There is also a man from Manhattan whose house is so cluttered and disorganized that he has to access the rooms using the fire escape.

Most of the people who have this kind of hoarding behavior suffer from obsessive-compulsive disorder. Nonetheless, society should not look down upon these people. Instead, we should focus on the positive lessons that we can learn from them.

To most people, all trash should go into the bin and be whisked away to the various designated waste disposal areas. However, have you ever stopped and wondered what would happen if the municipalities and the waste disposal companies decided to stop offering garbage collection services? According to a study that was conducted by USA EPA, in 2012, 251 million tons of waste was generated in the United States. Only 87 million tons were recycled or composted; the rest was deposited in landfills or incinerated.

One of the lessons that we can learn about green living from the many hoarder stories that make headlines is the amount of waste that we generate and the effects of our day-to-day activities on the environment. We can change the world by coming up with ingenious ways of reducing our ecological footprint and embracing the various green living technologies and products.
