“Go Green” at home

There are a lot of people who take everything, including going green, to the extreme. Truth is, to get started with green living you don’t have to do that much. You can get started with making small, conscious decisions about how you go about your everyday life:

  1. Recycle plastic. Plastic is made from a combination of environmentally unfriendly chemicals. These chemicals are dangerous for both the environment and health of humans.
  2. Replace disposable plastic water bottles with glass or stainless steel bottles.
  3. Replace plastic dishes with glass or ceramic ones.
  4. Buy a roasting pan and a few baking pans if you cook a lot. Not only does this save money, but it’s a lot easier and more convenient to use firm thick pans than aluminum ones.
  5. Appliances such as dishwashers, washers and dryers use a lot of power. To conserve energy, use them with full loads only. By doing so you will cut the carbon dioxide emissions of your household and save a lot of money on electricity.
  6. Next time you need to upgrade your appliances, choose Energy Star-qualified items. They probably cost a bit more compared to those that don’t have an Energy Star certification, but they do save you money in the long run.
  7. Here’s a tip when it comes to your TV, DVR-R and computer: even while in sleep mode, these devices still consume a lot of energy. Unplug them to be green and save on your bill.
  8. In most cases, when going to movies, concerts or traveling, you don’t need a paper ticket. You can buy e-tickets to the movies online. When flying, your boarding pass can be downloaded to your phone and saves printing.
  9. Use natural household cleaners.
  10. Switch your lightbulbs to CFLs. CFL stands for compact fluorescent lamp. CFL lamps use one-fifth to one-third the electric power of regular lightbulbs and last eight to fifteen times longer.
